Tragedy Strikes Valued Member of Prebon Energy Singapore

Macari "Mac" Tan, MD of Prebon Energy (Singapore) unexpectedly passed away on 17th August 2003. Acknowledged as a leading oil swaps broker, Mac had been at the helm of Prebon Energy in Asia since 1997.

Mac, 42 years of age, had been playing a friendly soccer match when he collapsed on the pitch in the last few minutes of the game. He was immediately taken to hospital where he later passed away.

Mac started his career as a floor trader at the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (Simex) in 1987 serving the financial and oil industries. Between 1991 and 1997, Mac was with the oil broking company, Fearnoil, and had a very successful career as the managing director. Then in 1997, Mac, along with some of his key traders took the opportunity to move to Prebon and set up the Asian Energy Team.

Since Mac and his team joined Prebon, the team has doubled in size to a team of eleven. The Prebon Energy team is one of the most successful energy broking teams in Asia and is consistently voted the best broking company in Energy & Power Risk Management (EPRM) annual surveys in the product areas they cover – gasoil, jet fuel, and fuel oil.

Over the years, Mac gained enormous insight and experience in the energy sector, and specifically in trading oil product derivatives. He was a well known figure in the oil trading community and this tragedy will be a loss not only to his family and friends but also to the many colleagues and industry contacts he made over the years.

Our thoughts are with Mac's family and friends.
